China was reported to have shut down access to its banking system in North Korea, with Trump praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for what he called a "very bold" move.

Kim said Trump's comments were reflective of "mentally deranged behavior".

"Trump's insults make our rocket's visit to the entire U.S. mainland inevitable all the more", the Independent quoted Yong Ho as saying. Experts say this is the first time a North Korean leader has made a direct address to an global audience - and it merits serious and thorough consideration.

Experts say the most likely way North Korea would conduct an atmospheric test over the Pacific is to launch a long-range missile - probably flying over Japan - and have its nuclear warhead detonate in the skies over a remote part of the ocean.

Trump and Kim have attacked each other and exchanged provocative threats amid growing tension over North Korea's nuclear programme.

A handful of North Korea analysts believe that this is the first time Kim Jong Un has ever released a first-person statement.

Trump tweeted: "Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before".

The warning came days after Trump, in a speech before the United Nations General Assembly, derisively called Kim "Rocket Man" and said it might be necessary to "completely destroy" North Korea.

He said "now that Trump has denied the existence of and insulted me and my country in front of the eyes of the world and made the most ferocious declaration of a war in history", North Korea would consider the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure" to make Mr Trump "pay dearly for his speech".

"[If the US] is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea", Trump told world leaders.

In what is being called an "extraordinary rebuke", Mr. Kim called Mr. Trump the "mentally deranged US dotard" in retaliation to the UNGA speech.

"This could probably mean the strongest hydrogen bomb test over the Pacific Ocean".

"I love Kim", Maher said as he laughed.

Donald Trump has stepped up his campaign against North Korea.

This incident follows a week of rhetoric from Washington and Pyongyang. "There's a certain amount of bluster that's taken for granted when you're dealing with North Korea", the official told Reuters.

"We can't have mad men out there shooting rockets all over the place", Trump said, indicating that past United States governments had failed to sufficiently tackle North Korea and its nuclear dreams. The country could still get a slot at another time.

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for statesmanship to avoid "sleepwalking" into a war.

While China and Russian Federation may have backed these sanctions, it has urged countries to carry out a dialogue with Pyongyang so that the matter is resolved.
