While wealthy Mexicans swamped by quake aid, poor feel abandoned

The death toll from Mexico's massive natural disaster rose to 319 on Sunday as rescuers scrambled to dig through the remnants of toppled buildings.

No new damage was immediately reported but rescue efforts were suspended to allow authorities to see if the new tremors would put workers at risk, said Luis Felipe Puente, the head of Mexico's civil protection agency. The death toll is still unclear, but at least 300 are dead in Mexico City and surrounding states, according to news reports.

Tuesday's quake hit on the anniversary of a 1985 tremor that killed an estimated 10,000 people.

For the family of Adrian Moreno, a missing 26-year-old human resources worker at an accounting firm, the emotional roller coaster is getting to be too much.

Mancera said that the city had reviewed 7,649 buildings and found that 87 percent were inhabitable and needed only minor repairs. Only 28 have made it out alive - all in the first hours.
