After their first Wild Card Game win since the game's introduction in 2012, the New York Yankees are preparing for their first American League Division Series since that same year and a matchup with the Cleveland Indians. Girardi often utilizes his challenges during the regular season (and well; this season, the Yankees were successful on 29 of their 41 challenges, the best percentage in baseball), and in a game like this, when your team's back is to the wall, he chose not to.

With a 1-2 count and two outs in the sixth, Green's 95-mph pitch hit something before catcher Gary Sanchez snagged it.

"II'll have the whole off-season to think about what I'll do moving forward", Tanaka said through a translator. "To me, it's not about me wanting to pitch the first game or wanting to pitch the second game".

"He helps us win, " Francona said. "Usually, we give CC somewhere around 90 pitches".

Sabathia (14-5, 3.69 ERA) has had a career resurgence this year at age 36. Jay Bruce provided the offense with three RBIs, including a two-run home run.

Things didn't start out well for Sabathia. "So I'm not really too concerned about it". "So it's not surprising at all".

When Terry Francona kept his ace on the bench for Game 1, we wondered what he was thinking. The Indians initially said he had a sprained ankle. "Top to bottom, they do everything". They make you throw a lot of pitches. He had given up only two hits and a walk on the night while striking out eight Yankees hitters.

Oddly enough, Aaron Judge was not part of the home run festivities, following up his very bad Game 1 (0-for-4, four Ks), with another muted performance (0-for-3, three walks). "I'm excited for him because a year ago he missed out". That includes his start against the Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series.

On the flip side, Sabathia ran into a bit of trouble in the early going of the game, but was able to settle and set down the Indians in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
