Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, had been in the country since September.

Even before this latest update, it was already the deadliest shooting in modern US history.

News first reported the wire transfer, citing "multiple senior law enforcement officials", and CNN later confirmed it with another official.

The official, who has been briefed regularly on the probe but spoke on condition of anonymity, said the working assumption of investigators was that the money was intended as a form of life insurance payment for Danley. While there's still not much information pertaining to his motives, the police continue to investigate what happened that night. It comes on the eve a condolence visit by President Donald Trump to Las Vegas.

But the White House pushed back at calls to reopen the United States debate on tighter gun controls.

"There are reports her ID was used for booking the hotel or some such detail", Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said. Paddock was not known to have served in the military, to have suffered from a history of mental illness or to have registered any inkling of social disaffection.

Ms Danley, 62, who has been called a "person of interest" by investigators, said she knew Paddock as a "kind, caring, quiet man" and hoped they would have a future together.

There were tributes throughout the day, throughout the world for the victims of Sunday night's shooting in Las Vegas.

Investigators are still trying to find out why Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on a open air concert from the 32nd flor of a hotel.

Housekeepers said they "saw no signs of anything" suspicious in the two-room suite, Nevada Rep. Dina Titus told CNN. Authorities previously found 42 guns in Paddock's hotel room and at his Mesquite, Nevada, home.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Paddock fired through the door of his hotel room and hit a security guard in the leg. He had devices attached to 12 semiautomatic rifles that allowed them to mimic fully automatic gunfire.

McCabe told CNN that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was going through Paddock's communications, financial records, associates and video surveillance - anything to try to piece together the puzzle of his motive.

Lombardo said investigators had discovered several pounds of an explosive called tannerite in the Mesquite home, as well as ammonia nitrate, a type of fertilizer, in the gunman's vehicle. Police don't know if the devices were transmitting - the FBI is investigating their use - but the Clark County sheriff said he thinks Paddock might have used them to watch for people approaching his room.

The authorities in Las Vegas revised the death toll down from 59 on Tuesday evening, saying that one of the bodies was that of the gunman.

He killed 58 concertgoers and injured more than 500 in Las Vegas.
