In meetings in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi this week, Gandhi had repeatedly highlighted the state of the economy and even dared the Prime Minister to resign and install a Congress government if the situation didn't improve.

Clearing indicating that the party stands behind Virbhadra Singh, who is facing cases of disproportionate property and is out on bail, he said: "Virbhadra Singh ji has done tremendous development as six-time Chief Minister".

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi launched the Congress election campaign at Mandi on Saturday.

Mocking the "Gujarat model for development", the Congress scion said the development of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat are on different parameters and claimed that the hill state fared better.

"There is a competition with China and China provides jobs to 50,000 youths every day whereas the Modi government gives jobs to 450 youths".

He said, Punjab under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh has already started the process of the return of the Congress. "Gurdaspur will be the repeat of the 2017 assembly elections under Capt Amarinder Singh's leadership", he asserted while expressing confidence that the Congress will win the election with a record margin and it will be a clear referendum against the wrong and anti-people policies of the BJP government.

Terming their shifting of allegiance as unacceptable, Khurshid added that he would have respected people if they were disenchanted with the party and withdrew from politics but instead they were joining parties about which they had been critical for years.
