Microsoft has finally admitted that Windows Phone is dead

Belfiore tweeted that Microsoft will still issue bug fixes and security updates to users of the platform, but that new features and hardware are no longer the "focus".

Microsoft's Windows division would no more be focusing on Window 10 mobile, informed by the Microsoft's Windows division head. The Metro UI was also featured in the company's largely unpopular Windows 8 desktop OS, possibly contributing to consumer hesitation towards the mobile counterpart. "Of course we'll continue to support the platform", said Belfiore, "bug fixes, security updates, etc. Paid money. wrote apps 4 them. but volume of users is too low for most companies to invest", he said.

Microsoft recommends that the users should upgrade their machines to a newer version of Windows 10 operating system, otherwise the machines will be vulnerable to hacks. But despite everything, there were not a sufficient number of users for companies to invest in the platform. Currently, Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) alone account for 99% of the global smartphone market, according to figures from Gartner. Instead, we think, from now on, the company is likely to focus on Android and iOS apps more than before.

This may not come as a surprise for most, but Microsoft has officially killed off Windows Phone.

'We regret to inform you that at the end of March, the app version you're using is no longer supported and you cannot send and receive messages. Even in France, where Microsoft had nearly caught up with iOS in 2015 with 12% of the market, Windows Phone has passed under the 1 %.

This sounds like it's coming from a broken record already, but Windows phones are dead. Windows 10 Mobile may attempt to make a comeback like Blackberry but with the near-defunct operating system, it is not going to be an easy task.

The company "gutted its phone business last year", the website says, which resulted in "thousands of job cuts".

"We have tried very hard to incentivise app developers", continued Belfiore. The resulting small userbase has made investment in app creation unattractive to developers, perpetuating a bottomless cycle of downward decline. Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently said that he had switched to Android. Nearly for as long as it's existed, Microsoft's mobile platform has suffered from an "app gap" that's made it unappealing to consumers.
