Palestinian reconciliation still far from a done deal

"In truth, if this happens, it will not lead to a genuine reconciliation [agreement] but will rather reinforce Fatah's dominance and autocratic governance over the Palestinian political spectrum and institutions".

The Fatah-Hamas talks, brokered by Egypt, are supposed to kick off on Tuesday in Cairo to discuss implementation of the 2011 Cairo agreement between the two major Palestinian factions on reconciliation and reunification of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, divided since the 2007 Hamas coup. After suffering under ever-more-severe sanctions imposed by PA President Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas announced last month it was dissolving its administration and would be open to reuniting the parties under the PA.
