India's largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel on Wednesday announced it has entered into a partnership with Karbonn Mobiles to sell its 4G enabled feature phone variant. "This is yet another step in our ongoing journey to deeply understand customers and bring innovation that delights them", Raj Pudipeddi, director, Consumer Business & CMO, Bharti Airtel said. According to Airtel, in addition to the price of Rs 1399 for the phone, a monthly pack of Rs 169 is essential.

In a public statement dated on October 11, Airtel said this is the first of a few associations that it intends to have with portable handset makers "to bring exceedingly moderate packaged 4G phone alternatives to the market and satisfy the digital requirements of a huge number of Indians". While the phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat, there is a 1400 mAh battery powering the Karbonn A40 Indian. In terms of camera, the phone is packing a 2MP rear camera with flash and a front camera for selfies. It also has dual-SIM support and offers complete access to all apps on Google Play Store, including popular apps such as WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook. The two together will be offering the Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone at just Rs 1,399 after refunds as opposed to the retail price of Rs 3,499.

Coming to the specifications, the partnership aims to defy the price-vs-specs ratio as the A40 Indian is built around a 4-inch display, which bears a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

The Google certified smartphone will be given to the customer at a down payment of Rs 2,899.

Alternately, customers can also do a recharge of ₹169 per month continuously for 36 months to get a total cashback of ₹1500 after 36 months. "However, to claim the cash refund benefit, recharges worth Rs 3000 must be done within the first 18 months (to claim the first refund installment of Rs 500) and another Rs 3000 over the next 18 months (to claim the second refund installment of Rs 1000)", Airtel said in a statement. If making calls, and the wide range of Jio's services appeal to you then the JioPhone with its effectively free pricing is the phone for you. A user has to make recharges for 36 months, and after 18 months, the company will repay INR 500 and the company will refund remaining INR 1000 rupees after the cycle of 36 months.

In a related development, British telecom giant Vodafone and India's Idea, in their bid to consolidate their market share with the advent of Reliance Jio are merging into a single brand and also planning to bring Airtel Karbonn A40 Indian-like budget smartphone to take on the Reliance JioPhone.

The Karbonn A40 Indian also supports VoLTE, and, comes with features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Global Positioning System. 91mobiles broke the exclusive news last month that the device will be priced below Rs 2,000, and rightly so, as the first device that the telco is offering in partnership with Karbonn will cost you Rs 1,399, albeit with a catch.

The Reliance JioPhone is essentially a smartphone in a feature phone form factor. The company has not mentioned the kind of data and voice call benefits that users will get at Rs 169. Finally, the phone comes with support for 22 Indian languages.
