Firefighters talk to students for Fire Prevention Week

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Sunset Hills is just one of the many stops firefighters will be making.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends creating a map of the home with all members of the household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit, and to practice twice a year.

Ocean City Fire Department is participating in National Fire Prevention Week.

"It is critical that residents have working smoke alarms in case of a fire emergency", Capt. Warren Robinson said. Although too young to really grasp the idea of fire safety and truly understand it, exposing them to firefighters in full equipment still helps. In a fire situation, when the smoke alarm sounds, a practiced home escape plan ensures that everyone knows how to use the precious minutes wisely.

Now, before a fire happens, is the time to prepare one and to practice using it.

For over 90 years, Fire Prevention Week has brought awareness nationwide to fire safety and preparedness.

"No matter where you're at in that home, whether you're a child, an elderly person or anybody else in the home, they should know if that doors blocked, I can go out this door or that window".

"You don't have time to gather all the belongings or any special mementos or anything like that", he said. A burning building should never be re-entered. Although not all home fires can be prevented, there are plenty of preventative measures that you can take to keep your home and family safe, should you find yourselves in a heated situation.

Over the last five years, in 36 per cent of fatal home fires, there was no smoke alarm warning (in 18% there was no smoke alarm and in 18% the smoke alarm did not operate).

Kids in attendance will be given fire safety handouts.
