On October 9, 2017 Hollis Daniels was arrested by Texas Tech Police Department Officer XXXXX XXXX for possession of a control substance.

Jail records indicate Daniels had previous run-ins with the law, faced drug charges and was briefly booked into jail for speeding.

It's unclear whether Daniels has obtained an attorney.

He transferred to the Texas Tech Police Department Lubbock campus on May 1, 2017 as a police officer, completing his Field Training Officer Program on August 31, 2017. East leaves behind his wife, Carmen, and two daughters, Anna and Monica.

It's unclear whether the weapon used to kill the officer belonged to Daniels or was swiped from an officer at the station or from a squad vehicle, University Police Chief Kyle Bonath said late Monday.

How did the 19-year-old shooter have a gun?

On Monday afternoon, Daniels was brought into the Texas Tech police station after officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia in his dorm during a "welfare check".

Two officers were originally dispatched to Daniels' campus dorm suite inside Talkington Residence Hall late Monday afternoon after his mother called the university hotline fearing her son was a danger to himself, university spokesman Chris Cook told ABC News.

While the university was on lockdown, the Texas Tech Student Counseling Center alerted authorities that Daniels's family had called to report the student might be in possession of a weapon and having suicidal thoughts.
