National Football League spokesperson disputes Trump claim on tax breaks

The issue has divided football fans since last season, when quarterback Colin Kaepernick, then with the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the anthem as a way of protesting what he viewed as police brutality and the systemic oppression of black people in America.

Vice President Mike Pence walked out of a Indianapolis Colts-San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday after several 49ers took a knee during the anthem.

NFL owners are reportedly considering a rule change that would require players to stand during the national anthem, according to Christine Wang of CNBC.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after his team's game on Sunday that he would bench players who disrespect the USA flag.

Trump made a reference Wednesday on Twitter to Goodell's meetings next week with NFL owners, where they will consider changes to a game manual that says players "should" stand during the national anthem.

"We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues", the letter continued.

Commissioner Roger Goodell told club executives Tuesday in a memo that the anthem issue is dividing the league from its fans. "We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players". He said the National Football League needs "to move past this controversy".

President Donald Trump said in a tweet on Sunday that he had asked Pence to leave the stadium "if any player kneeled, disrespecting our country". Pence later said that he "will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag, or our national anthem".

Kaepernick started the kneeling movement past year when he played for the San Francisco 49ers, refusing to stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner" to protest the treatment of black people by police.

In an interview on Fox News Channel's (FNC) Hannity airing Wednesday night, Trump said the National Football League could've avoided this issue by suspending Kaepernick.

"I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen", added Trump.
