United Kingdom government confirms up to £557 million for new renewable energy projects

Less established renewable energy projects will include offshore wind, biomass, energy-from-waste technologies and combined heat and power projects.

"Clean Growth is at the heart of the Industrial Strategy, and the United Kingdom government is determined to unlock opportunities across the United Kingdom, while cutting carbon emissions as the world moves to towards a low carbon future".

"Ministers are seizing the global opportunity to lead on low-carbon economic growth".

The UK government today released its Clean Growth Strategy, a plan to cut emissions, while delivering economic growth, including policies and proposals on transport, power, housing, business and the environment.

Notably, the strategy confirms that the government will "publish a new Resources and Waste Strategy to make the United Kingdom a world leader in terms of competitiveness, resource productivity and resource efficiency". The Government has given a clear message on electric vehicles and green finance. "It will also show how actions taken to tackle emissions have helped to reduce energy bills for households".

"Government is clear that clean growth is a priority for the United Kingdom, and that the low-carbon sector can help to increase the competitiveness and productivity of our economy in the decades ahead, creating high-value jobs as well as taking effective action on climate change".

The industry has hailed a series of waste and resources policies launched by the Government, including a ban on food waste to landfill by 2030, as "potential game changers".

Ambition for the United Kingdom to be zero avoidable waste economy by 2050.

"In addition, the suggestion that materials should be managed in relation to their environmental impact opens the door to smarter targets in the future".

The £2.5 billion of existing government spending includes up to £505 million from the BEIS's Energy Innovation Program, which aims to accelerate the commercialization of innovative clean energy technologies and progresses. Morton added that following the strategy's targets, tangible support must be provided for mandatory separate food waste collections in England and the "urgent tabling of legislation on the Renewable Heat Incentive to renew support for biomethane-to-grid". No other technology can make such a key contribution to so many different areas of the Clean Growth Strategy.
