One missing, six hurt after oil rig explosion in Louisiana

An oil rig exploded Sunday on Lake Pontchartrain just northwest of New Orleans, causing at least six injuries, authorities said.

McGregor says there were "a lot of injuries" with at least six confirmed and more expected. The latter saw 4.9 million barrels (210,000,000 US gallons) of oil being spilled into waters in the gulf with 11 deaths being reported.

Reports came into the Emergency Operations center around 8 p.m. of fire and smoke being seen from Lake Pontchartrain.

CBS affiliate WWL-TV reported that the Coast Guard New Orleans Division sent a small boat and helicopter to the scene.

The platform, which is located in unincorporated Jefferson Parish, is in production and owned by Clovelly Oil Co., according to Taylor Darden, who is a lawyer for the company and listed with the Louisiana Secretary of State as its registered agent.

During a press conference at 10 p.m. Sunday, officials said seven people were rescued, and one person was still unaccounted for.

Once daylight arrives, both the Coast Guard and Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation aim to perform water quality evaluations. As of now, several people have been rescued from the active fire on the rig and transported to the hospital.

Jefferson Parish officials say there were cleaning chemicals aboard the platform but do not know the exact cause of the fire at this time.

Witnesses said they heard a large explosion around 7:45pm local time. Treasure Chest Casino will remain open and operational during these efforts.

"Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Jefferson County Parish, and St. Charles Parish also have marine units on scene".
