Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has stopped checking his social media accounts because of the abuse he gets from critics.

Reports of a possible shock switch to the Emirates gathered pace on the final day of the summer window, with City rumoured to be willing to use Sterling as a makeweight in any deal to sign Alexis Sanchez.

Pep Guardiola's City always indicated that they wanted a cash-only deal for Sanchez, who ended up staying in north London after a £60 million ($80 million, 68 million euros) attempt to sign him fell through.

The England worldwide endured a hard first season at the Etihad Stadium under Manuel Pellegrini after joining from Liverpool in 2015 but he credits Guardiola's "genius" approach with uncluttering his game.

"Since I have been getting those negative comments, I realise the best thing to do is not to look at it, that has been my thing for the last few years, don't look at it so it won't affect you", he said. "I have three and a half years left".

It wasn't something that I was anxious about because Pep is an honest guy and he would've spoken to me before that [if City wanted to sell me], so I didn't need to worry about it and I didn't think about it for one minute.

The incident was captured on video. "Some fans were pretty sore losers", wrote video poster Sean Girvan on Instagram. The Panthers fan then proceeds to punch the older man several times, causing blood to stream down the victim's face.

"I didn't have any negative thoughts or anything bad about it [the speculation]".

The former Liverpool forward has seven goals in all competitions so far this season and is closing in on his best every tally of 11 goals in a campaign, which he has achieved twice.

Sterling praised Guardiola's contribution to his game.

"He's been massive for me, especially with the simple stuff", Sterling added. "That's the most important thing for me, trying to get inside the box, because that's where the majority of my goals come from". "That has been a massive question mark".

Since that moment City have been in irresistible form, winning every game and scoring an incredible 32 times in eight subsequent matches. They make high pressing and unbelievable buildup in the middle.
