The 19-times grand slam victor claimed his 94th title and sixth this year with an emphatic defeat of Nadal in the Shanghai final and is hungry for a first ATP Finals win since 2011.

But this time he was up against it nearly right away.

Although Nadal still holds an edge in the career series - he is now 23-15 against Federer - that actually may make the win more significant for Federer.

Nadal, who has also got back to his best in the 2017 following on from severe injury issues that have threatened his future in the sport, claimed a 10th French Open championship on clay, but has come up short against Federer on every occasion throughout the calendar year.

"I don't know what my expectations were going in", Federer said.

It was a 94th title for the Swiss legend, drawing him level with the great Ivan Lendl. "But the conditions here were much better for him than for me, being honest". "I played a great match today with hardly any mistakes", he said in his post-match presser.

The 31-year-old Nadal, who was on a 16-match streak before Sunday's final, said Federer was reaping the benefits of taking breaks from the sport.

Maria Sharapova won her first title in more than two years.

The Russian, a tournament wild card, overcame the Belarusian teenager 7-5, 7-6 (8) despite trailing heavily in both sets.

Nadal also had a good takeaway from the tournament. He broke Nadal's serve again on a second break point in the fifth game of the second set when Nadal sailed a backhand crosscourt wide.

Nadal saved the first break point but could not survive the second one, to put Federer in touch of the title. Now, following Federer's triumph in Shanghai last week, the two could be tied for the World No.1 by the end of the year. When somebody plays better than you, sport is not very hard.

He said he believes he lost the epic 2008 Wimbledon final against Nadal because he was still rattled by a heavy defeat just a few weeks earlier at Roland Garros.

Roger Federer has closed the gap on Rafael Nadal at the top of the latest ATP world rankings released on Monday following his victory over the Spaniard at the Shanghai Masters.

He declined to say if he had been hampered by a problem with his right knee, which had a bandage on it during the match.

"After losing a final it's not the moment".
