When asked during a White House press conference about American soldiers killed in Niger, Trump said they made "the ultimate sacrifice" and rambled a bit about when exactly he reached out to their families before making the unsubstantiated claims against Obama and other presidents. "A lot of them didn't make calls".

For his part, Trump tweeted his support for the Gateway Pundit's debunkd conspiracy theory.

Trump modified his position - slightly - and claimed that he was "told" Obama didn't often call the families of fallen soldiers. On Instagram, Souza posted a photo of the Obamas meeting with the parents of a fallen Army sergeant.

After his recent trip to Puerto Rico, for example, the president bragged, "I guess it's one of the few times anybody has done this". I don't know, that's what I was told. He also said of Obama and other previous presidents that "a lot of them didn't make calls", an assertion that former Obama aides forcefully denied. "From what I am hearing it's the first time that a sitting president has done something like this".

His was candidacy was well-received by conservatives who felt former president Barack Obama had disrespected the armed services while in office. His accusation that most presidents did not call families of military personnel killed in action is provoking a heated response.

"I don't know if he did".

'I'm going to be calling them. Excuse me, Peter. I do a combination of both.

"It is a very hard thing", Trump said. "But in addition, I actually wrote letters individually to the soldiers we're talking about, and they're going to be going out either today or tomorrow".

A former Obama White House official strenuously objected to the claim in an email to TPM, as have several other former Obama White House staffers.
