When asked during a White House press conference about American soldiers killed in Niger, Trump said they made "the ultimate sacrifice" and rambled a bit about when exactly he reached out to their families before making the unsubstantiated claims against Obama and other presidents. "A lot of them didn't make calls".

For his part, Trump tweeted his support for the Gateway Pundit's debunkd conspiracy theory.

Trump modified his position - slightly - and claimed that he was "told" Obama didn't often call the families of fallen soldiers. On Instagram, Souza posted a photo of the Obamas meeting with the parents of a fallen Army sergeant.

After his recent trip to Puerto Rico, for example, the president bragged, "I guess it's one of the few times anybody has done this". I don't know, that's what I was told. He also said of Obama and other previous presidents that "a lot of them didn't make calls", an assertion that former Obama aides forcefully denied. "From what I am hearing it's the first time that a sitting president has done something like this".

His was candidacy was well-received by conservatives who felt former president Barack Obama had disrespected the armed services while in office. His accusation that most presidents did not call families of military personnel killed in action is provoking a heated response.

CNN reported over the weekend that Trump was golfing while the remains of LaDavid Johnson, one of the four killed in the attack, was returned to Dover Air Force Base, a juxtaposition critics pounced on.

The Pentagon has not provided a detailed accounting of the ambush by 50 ISIS affiliated fighters which left four USA soldiers dead and two wounded and has said the incident remains under investigation. "I like, when I can, the combination of a call and also a letter".

"I don't know if he did".

'I'm going to be calling them. Excuse me, Peter. I do a combination of both.

"It is a very hard thing", Trump said. "But in addition, I actually wrote letters individually to the soldiers we're talking about, and they're going to be going out either today or tomorrow".

A former Obama White House official strenuously objected to the claim in an email to TPM, as have several other former Obama White House staffers.

"I completely reject the idea that that was slow", Mattis said.

The attackers had rocket propelled grenades and machine guns, while the United States troops were armed only with rifles and were in unarmored trucks according to officials.

"It's been the furthest thing from my mind and the minds of my family", said Will Wright, the brother of Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright, adding he bore no ill-will toward Trump.
