Google is honoring Mexican American music icon Selena Quintanilla on the anniversary of her first studio album release with a new Doodle.

Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971, but her life was tragically cut short when she was murdered in 1995 by the president of her fan club in Corpus Christi.

Internet search engine giant Google pays tribute to late Selena with a special animated doodle to celebrate her contribution to music, entertainment and fashion industries.

"I felt like Selena deserved something very cool and thought we could go really big on this one", said Perla Campos, Global Marketing Lead for Google Doodles and project manager for the Selena Quintanilla Google Doodle. "Selena has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember", reflected the supervisor, echoing the void of representation that so many immigrants live in the United States.

Instead of the usual doodle background note, Campos wrote a heartfelt account of how as a little girl she was taught by Selena to believe that "no matter who you are or where you come from, anything is possible", she wrote. MAC's collaboration with her was their best-selling collection of all time.

And Quintanilla, whose family offered insights to the artists for this Doodle, sees Google's animation as a force for good.

Selena was always making music, even before anyone knew her signature name.

And while Suzette and her family couldn't be happier with the "perfect story" told "from when she was young to adult Selena", Suzette admits she never thought to have a Google Doodle created of her late sister.

The Selena Museum also partnered with Google for "Fotos y Recuerdos", an online exhibition of her awards, costumes, fan art and other items that are on display at the museum, which launched today. We hope that everyone - both fans and people learning about Selena for the first time - enjoys this celebration and feels the positivity and hope Selena embodied and still continues to represent today.
