Now, the company has successfully completed the first trial test of the X50 modem. The SoC has custom Kryo 260 processing cores promising a 40 percent performance improvement over the current Snapdragon 630. Similar to other middle-class Qualcomm processors, the new one too supports nearly every mobile networks on the planet.

"There are many different definitions of 5G, some of which could be implemented by 2019, and those that wouldn't be, such as millimetre wave, which will probably take a lot longer", said Prof Webb. The Snapdragon 636 also comes with support for modern ultrawide FHD+ displays and Assertive Display, which optimizes the visibility of the display in all lighting conditions. So this processor will bring the same functionality of the high end smartphones to your mid-range smartphone.

The Snapdragon 636 is basically an upgrade of the Snapdragon 630 and is made from the same 14-nanometer FinFET process as the 630 (and the 660).

Qualcomm also announced its first 5G reference phone.

The device sports a 6.00-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 2160 pixels at a PPI of 402 pixels per inch. The company has dubbed both displays as FullView displays and can be closely compared with Apple's 2017 lineup of smartphones.

The chip will provide enhanced gaming and display technology support in comparison to the Snapdragon 630, said Qualcomm. Video recording is available in 1080p at 120 fps or 4K at 30 fps. According to Qualcomm, this will allow a peak download speed of about 600Mps.

The firm expects 5G to co-exist with 4G LTE for a number of years, but eventually it will apparently offer speeds ten times the level we can now achieve with the present LTE standard. They will also support next generation calling service.

The chipset is expected to ship in November 2017. The phones will carry affordable price tags for everyone.

The company's Qualcomm Technologies subsidiary achieved a 5G data connection on a 5G modem chipset for mobile devices-with an emphasis on "mobile". This is the second time after the Snapdragon 660 that the celebrated Kyro architecture is used in a non-flagship chipset. Sherif Hanna, Staff Manager of Product Marketing for 4G/5G at Qualcomm said that millimeter-wave is just too tricky to use in smartphones and they are using massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques to make the millimeter-wave mobile.
