Power forwards Nikola Mirotic and Bobby Portis reportedly scuffled in practice, until Portis ended things with a cheap shot punch to the face that sent Mirotic to the hospital.

As told by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the two players had been talking trash during a practice scrimmage and got into a shoving match that escalated when Mirotic charged at Portis twice.

Portis was suspended eight games by the team, per K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune. "He's a good kid, but he made a mistake". He is expected to miss four-to-six weeks, but he'll first need to clear concussion protocol.

The Bulls noted in their official news release that surgery is likely required for Mirotic and so have the doctors, according to Paxson. Mirotic dropped to the floor and lay there for several minutes before getting up. Mirotic was hospitalized after the incident.

In one of the more... let's just say, "interesting" stories of this young National Basketball Association season, Bulls forward Bobby Portis apparently clocked teammate Nikola Mirotic in the face following a heated practice yesterday. Portis then punched Mirotic in the face, and the blow gave Mirotic maxillary fractures in his face and a concussion.

The Bulls are evaluating disciplinary action, and ESPN reported Portis would be suspended for multiple games. He signed a two-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed to stay with the Bulls.

There's a lot of high expectations for Portis, the 22-year-old Little Rock, Ark. native, who averaged 6.8 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Bulls last season.
