Thousands of Rohingya refugees stranded near Bangladesh-Myanmar border

These refugees were waiting to be registered by the Bangladeshi authorities before being transferred to camps raised to house them, Efe news reported.

As of Tuesday morning, the new arrivals were still squatting in the paddy fields of Anjuman Para village, where the sound of gunfire continues to be heard every night from the Myanmar side.

On Tuesday, worldwide aid agencies sharply revised upward their overall estimate for the number of Rohingya refugees who have fled to southeastern Bangladesh amid a cycle of violence in Rakhine that broke out on August 25.

Bangladesh's social services department said 13,751 children without a parent or parents were identified in a survey of the crowded refugee camps along its border, where charities warn that a humanitarian crisis is unfolding. Myanmar's government has said it was responding to attacks by Muslim insurgents, but the United Nations and others have said the response was disproportionate. The refugees have described widespread and indiscriminate violence and arson. He said a couple of USA diplomats have been able to visit.

"We really hold the military leadership accountable for what's happening", Tillerson said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

The continuing exodus of Rohingya has become a major humanitarian crisis and sparked worldwide condemnation of Buddhist-majority Myanmar, which still denies atrocities are taking place.
