Local unemployment rate falls, state rate stays steady

Employers in Colorado added 4,000 nonfarm payroll jobs from August to September for a total of 2,656,200 jobs, according to the survey of business establishments.

Pennsylvania's nonfarm jobs count was up 10,300 to a record high of 5,970,400 in September. The sector saw a drop of 23,300 in its non-adjusted figure.

"Even a loss of 3,000 to 4,000 jobs, while very significant in a local economy like Sonoma-Napa, has limited impact in statewide numbers, which include 16.8 million payroll jobs". Resident employment and unemployment both declined over the month.

The number of jobs in the state hit 1,033,320 in September, up by more than 14,000 over a year ago. It is based on a monthly survey of 985 houses.

The agency said private sector employment in September increased by 8,200 over the previous month, primarily due to gains in trade, transportation and utilities (4,300 jobs) and the leisure and hospitality sector (1,800). It was the third straight month the rate has increased for the state after it plummeted in the first half of the year.

State officials say more people are working in SC than ever before. At 24 consecutive months, ME is experiencing the second-longest sustained period in over 40 years with an unemployment rate of 4 percent or lower, it said. North Dakota has the lowest rate in the region at 5.7 percent while IL is the highest at 9.9 percent.
