Shot Near USC Upstate, Police Searching Campus for Suspect

One person was shot when a gunman opened fire near the University of SC on Tuesday.

They said he was on foot near campus.

Lt. Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said, "That information is NOT accurate".

The university announced the lockdown via its official Twitter account at 12:41 p.m. and announced that the lockdown had been lifted at 1.55pm, reports the Charleston Post and Courier.

According to Tammy Whaley, a USC Upstate spokesperson, one individual has been shot and is suffering non-life-threatening injuries. He is described as a black male wearing khaki trousers and a grey hoodie.

"We are not sure where he is and that's why there's a campus lockdown", the officer said. She said the victim is not a student.

A number of police are on the scene, at the Campus Edge apartments.

"His initial story he was at the complex to meet someone and when he stopped to ask directions, the male suspect started fidgeting around his waistband, produced a weapon, and began firing", Bobo said.
