Former Welsh labour minister Carl Sargeant was found dead in an apparent suicide today, days after being sacked from the Cabinet over misconduct allegations.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described his death as "terrible and deeply shocking news", while deputy leader Tom Watson said his "thoughts and prayers are with Carl Sargeant's family right now".

"He made a big contribution to Welsh public life and fought tirelessly for those he represented both as a minister and as a local assembly member".

He wrote to Welsh Labour's General Secretary requesting an urgent independent investigation "which would allow me to clear my name".

Sargeant, Wales's cabinet secretary for communities and children, had agreed to step down while an investigation was conducted into the allegations. He was sacked on Friday following allegations about his "personal conduct".

Supt Mark Pierce from North Wales Police said: "At approximately 11.30am today North Wales Police were called to a report that the body of a man had been found at an address in Connah's Quay". North Wales Police said they were not treating his death as suspicious.
