In an interview with Axios co-founder Mike Allen on Wednesday, former Vice President Joe Biden ripped the "phony nationalism" he said is "undermining the social fabric" of the nation.

Biden previously said he would not seek the 2016 Democratic nomination while he and his family grieved the loss of his son, Joseph "Beau" Biden III, who died of cancer in 2015.

"Well, he is, but he is a great and gifted writer and he said, "Look Joe" - I had written another book before that for a while was on the best seller list 20 some years ago and I had forgotten how much time I had put in to write the book". The one thing I think you know about me is I say what I mean and I never mince words about it, and I mean what I say... One, do they truly believe they are the most qualified, which I think I was, but was I prepared to give my whole heart, my whole soul, all my attention to the endeavor? Joe Biden speaks candidly to Ellen DeGeneres about the loss of his son Beau Biden.

"But anyway, yes, I understand", she said.

"And then have those who were protesting compared as a moral equivalent to those people?" he asked.

Biden also cheekily suggested the reason people wanted to see him run was simply that they preferred him to "the alternative", in what appeared to be a reference to President Donald Trump.

"They understand their strengths and they understand their weaknesses".

In the clips shown on "GMA", Biden didn't name Trump, although he described to Winfrey the characteristics he believes make for a successful leader.

Winfrey's interview with Biden airs Sunday on OWN.
