North Korea yesterday slammed US President Donald Trump's "warmonger" Asia tour, saying it would only accelerate Pyongyang's push for a full-fledged nuclear deterrent.

"The future of this region and its attractive people must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail", he said during a speech in Vietnam to the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

"His current trip to our surrounding region is a warmonger's visit for confrontation to rid the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) of its self-defensive nuclear deterrence", North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on state media, Korean Central News Agency.

The North's actions have also prompted global condemnation - a reaction to the dozens of ballistic missile tests in recent years, including its effort to develop an intercontinental device capable of reaching the United States mainland.

During his trip to Asia, Trump attempted a symbolic stare-down of Kim this week at the heavily fortified border that separates North and South Korea.

At a speech in South Korea's parliament on Wednesday, Trump denounced the North's "cruel dictatorship" but appeared to moderate his bellicose tone somewhat when he offered Pyongyang a "path to a better future". "Dead stop. The flourishing ends, and the prison state of North Korea sadly begins".

Trump will attend a state banquet on Saturday before a welcoming and deal-signing ceremony on Sunday morning.

The four-day exercise in the western Pacific involves USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt - as well as seven South Korean vessels, including three destroyers.

The three carriers will be likely together in the drills around Monday, according to a South Korean military official, who didn't want to be named, citing office rules. The Aegis technology refers to missile tracking and guidance.

In its statement Saturday, the North Korean government renewed its description of Trump as a "dotard".

It is the first such U.S. triple-carrier drill in the region for a decade.

The US has been sending its strategic assets, also including long-range bombers, to the region more frequently for patrols or drills amid accelerating North Korean efforts to expand its nuclear weapons program.

According to Bloomberg, the secretary said he didn't want to overinterpret the gap of almost two months since North Korea's last missile launch. That month it also test-launched a missile over Japan, sparking concern worldwide.
