Boston isn't the only part of the country experiencing cold, according to the weather service. There also is a chance of showers after 11 a.m., but forecasters believe not more than one-tenth of an inch is expected to fall.

The early wintry blast is the result of a deep pool of frigid polar air being the Arctic front that crossed through the region late Thursday.

Besides the coldest high temperature on record that's expected today, the mercury is also expected to plunge as low as 18 degrees before midnight tonight. In Philadelphia, the record of 21 degrees still appears to have gone unbroken.

In Trenton, the morning temperature dropped to 21 degrees, breaking the city's decades-old low of 25 for November 11. That would eclipse the coldest Veterans Day on record - 19 degrees, set in 1957.

The service forecast a slight warming Saturday with highs in the low- to mid-40s before dropping into the 20s again over Saturday night. By Monday, highs are anticipated to push closer to 40 degrees and may reach as high as 44 degrees Tuesday with a chance for rain showers in the afternoon.

The average low temperatures this time of the year is 36°. Such alerts come when temperatures are expected to be 13 degrees or below or when the temperature is at or below 20 degrees with winds of 5 miles per hour or higher.
