A senior cabinet official on Saturday said he was ready to ban the entry into the Philippines of two American lawmakers if ordered by President Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte.

The outspoken leader says a United Nations investigator has insulted him by criticising a brutal clampdown on drugs that has killed thousands. CNN adds that Duterte told the story of "maybe" killing someone as a candidate for president in 2015.

Since Mr Duterte took office in June 2016, more than 7,000 people have been killed in a brutal clampdown on illegal substances, with the leader saying he would be "happy to slaughter" three million drug addicts.

Across town, protesters from the militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) rallied outside Trump Towers, claiming the U.S. president had the intention of using the Philippines' territory to install more American military bases and that his heightened involvement in the country's affairs could drag them into war.

The Philippine military last month declared victory in the southern city of Marawi against militants loyal to the Islamic State extremist group, after Russian Federation sent army trucks and thousands of Kalashnikov assault rifles to Duterte.

"I want to pass on words of thanks from the Philippine people for the timely aid that Russian Federation provided by giving us trucks and weapons", he said as the two met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Danang, Vietnam.

He said he initially meant to buy weapons in the USA but "the United States has equal authority of Congress and President, so it was not so simple".

While he will no longer proceed with his plan for another short visit to Moscow, Duterte said he had to thank those who helped the country in its fight against terrorism.
