14 killed, 9 missing in Andhra boat tragedy

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed DGP Sambasiva Rao and Krishna district collector Lakshmi Kantham to rush to the spot and monitor the rescue operations.

The incident occurred at Ibrahimpatnam Ferry Ghat.

The authorities have pressed into service a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to rescue the missing passengers.

According to Vijayawada police, the motor boat with a three-man crew was ferrying 38 passengers from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam on the outskirts of Vijayawada for a religious ceremony on Karthika Masam.

Chinnarajappa said 32 members of the Ongole Walkers' Club were among those on board. We are in the process of identifying the victims. YSR Congress Party President YS Jaganmohan Reddy also expressed his grief, and said that the official machinery should speed up the rescue operation. He announced Rs 8 lakh compensation each to the families of the deceased.

Locals and rescue workers rescued 15 people.

The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people. They had travelled to Bhavani Island by an AP Tourism Development Corporation boat. Local media reports suggested the boat was overloaded with passengers and the buoyancy of water changed leading to the disaster.

The ill-fated boat was being operated by a private company and was said to be on a trial run.

The incident took place at Ibahimpatnam mandal in Krishna district.
