Trump offers to 'mediate' in sea dispute

In Vietnam earlier on Sunday, Trump said he was prepared to mediate in the dispute over the South China Sea, where four Southeast Asian countries and Taiwan contest China's sweeping claims to the busy waterway.

It is also the host of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which is set to welcome Trump and other world leaders.

China and Vietnam have been in dispute over Chinese island building in the South China Sea, and Vietnam's sudden halt to gas exploration in July after a Chinese threat. "It can ill-afford a violent confrontation".

"China is to work with ASEAN countries to maintain peace and stability, as well as development and prosperity in the South China Sea region", Xi Jinping said at the leaders' meeting on Sunday.
