Floor collapses at apartment party in Denton; only minor injuries reported

A homecoming party at a Texas school turned into terror and chaos when the third floor at a student housing complex collapsed.

"A vast choice of amenities and its friendly staff create a worry-free environment that allows residents to focus on the most important thing - being a successful college student", according to the complex website. Instead, they were at the Denton Police Department making a noise complaint about the party.

The student who lived in the second-story apartment was not at home at the time of the collapse.

Carley Carroll is a UNT sophomore who lives on the second floor directly below the unit that collapsed.

"We've called and said, 'It looks like the ceiling is going to cave in, ' so I feel like with us saying that, there could've been more that was done", she said.

Officials were forced to cut off water and power to the unit in which the collapse took place, the first- and second-floor apartments beneath it and nine other units in the building.

Denton firefighters believe the cause of the collapse was too much jumping.

Between 10 and 12 people received minor injuries in the collapse, police said.

The party's host, Abiola Busari, said he will be staying with some friends.

"TV's, computers, just everything", Carroll told WFAA. Carroll says that's typical; she's called the cops on the party-goers before.

Managers of the Ridge at North Texas apartment complex told reporters they relocating about 50 residents as a result of the incident.

Another email to tenants said the matter is being investigated by authorities and a structural engineer will be evaluating the building.
