Chennai: Woman dies after spurned suitor sets her on fire

In a shocking incident, a stalker set a girl and her family on fire in Chennai's Adambakkam area. Induja succumbed to her burns at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital while her mother Renuka and sister were hospitalised with serious burns, sources said.

On learning that her family was looking for a groom for her, Aakash went to Indujas residence last night and once again proposed to her. The report also said that when her parents put out advertisements on matrimonial sites for Induja, Akash threatened them.

Induja's relatives alleged that Akash had been pursuing Induja against her wishes for almost a month. He poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

The suspect, 23-year-old Akash, a science graduate, who was pursuing Induja against her wishes was arrested following the incident.

Media reports cited neighbours claiming that the ambulance arrived too late, at least 40 minutes after a call was made.

The victim was an engineer by profession and the accused was a classmate in school.

Induja's father was not at home at the time, according to NDTV. As per the witnesses present at the spot, the hospital ambulance took nearly 40 minutes to reach the residence after receiving a call from a neighbour. He forced the girl and her family members to open the door by threatening them of committing suicide by setting himself on fire.
