Jimmy Fallon paid tribute to his late-mother Gloria as he returned to The Tonight Show on Monday night for the first time since her death. Seated at a piano, Swift demanded attention with the introspective and emotional tune.

We do think that it is especially worth noting that Fallon didn't open the show with the tribute to his mother - instead, he performed a pretty standard monologue for him before sitting down at the desk and choosing that moment to pour out his heart. "'I love you.' I just knew we were in trouble". Fallon said he knew that Gloria's health was taking a turn for the worse when he squeezed her hand in the hospital, and she did not respond in kind. "I love you." I was crying. The tearjerker part? The lyrics happen to include: "You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi/I can tell that it's gonna be a long road".

He went on to tell a personal story about a childhood memory that has stuck with him, even as he was by his mom's side in the hospital in her last days.

"As some of you know, my mother Gloria passed away recently and I canceled our shows last week to be with my family and make arrangements", Fallon said. She said yes with zero hesitation.
