The right-back has yet to feature for Liverpool this season after picking up an injury against Tranmere in pre season.

Earlier this month manager Jurgen Klopp admitted Clyne's recovery had gone backwards.

Clyne's absence also ruled him out of the Reds" squad for the Champions League group stages, with Klopp forecasting it would be "some time' before he returned.

He did resume light training in September, but the 26-year-old has since suffered a setback and has now undergone "minor, corrective surgery" in a bid to rectify the problem. Hot on the heels of returning to action in the 4-1 win over West Ham United, the 25-year played his part as Senegal qualified for their first World Cup in 18-years - an outing that left his long-term fitness in question.

Liverpool's head of medicine Andy Massey travelled with Clyne to London after deciding the surgery was the best option.

Youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have so far filled in for Clyne, alternating in games with Gomez often being preferred in the league whilst Alexander-Arnold has featured in most Champions League games. Clyne has always been struggling with the back problem, which has seen him miss all competitive fixtures this season. The former has impressed for the Anfield outfit and his display saw him being called up to England's senior side for the first time. He played the full 90 minutes for Senegal in their 2-0 victory over South Africa.

"Obviously it is a concern that the hamstring injury is again on the agenda and it will be critical for us to monitor and manage that in the coming days", Klopp told liverpoolfc.com.
