Foreign Ministry spokesperson of China Geng Shuang mentioned in his speech that Beijing should not become a target for the US, Japan, India, and Australia.

It is learnt that China's rising military presence in the South China Sea figured in talks between Modi and Trump apart from a host of other regional and global issues, including terrorism emanating from Pakistan, North Korea's missile tests, situation in Afghanistan and the Gulf region as well as effect of violence in Myanmar's Rakhaine state.

A statement from the ministry emphasised, "a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region serves the long-term interests of all countries in the region and of the world at large".

The Australian foreign ministry said the four countries shared a vision for increased prosperity and security in the Indo-Pacific region and will work together to ensure that it "remains free and open".

The meeting comes ahead of the ASEAN summit on Tuesday, which is also likely to discuss the security challenges facing the Indo-Pacific region and China's military expansion in the South China Sea.

The article further said that the introduction of the Indo-Pacific concept is a reaction on part of these countries to China's growing global influence as a result of its Belt and Road (B&R) initiative. "In August, the Trump administration proposed a new South Asian policy in an effort to enhance relations with India so it can increase its influence in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region", the article said. Sources said India's statement sought to connect the clandestine links between North Korea and Pakistan in the development of their nuclear programmes. "The quadrilateral partners committed to deepening cooperation, which rests on a foundation of shared democratic values and principles, and to continue discussions to further strengthen the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region", the US State Department noted.

In the 45-minute-long meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, Modi told Trump that both nations can rise beyond bilateral ties and work jointly for the future of Asia, adding that India will try to "live up to the expectations" of the United States and the world.

The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Japansese Foreign Minister Taro Kono recently mooted the idea of launching a four-nation initiative.

The US and Japan have been pushing for a deeper Indian role in the strategically key Indo-Pacific region.
