In addition to the USS Ronald Reagan, the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the U.S. Navy also will mobilize 11 Aegis ships. This is the first time that three carrier strike groups have operated together in the Western Pacific since exercises Valiant Shield 2006 and 2007 off the coast of Guam.

South Korea and the United States will conduct a massive joint naval exercise involving three US aircraft carriers off the eastern coast Saturday in an unprecedented show of force aimed at deterring North Korea.

The carriers are required to meet up in the Sea of Japan during the week off the Korean Peninsula, according to a United States defense official.

Admiral Gregory Harris, commander of the Nimitz's strike group, said the training exercise sends a "powerful message" to North Korea.

North Korea's UN Ambassador, Ja Song Nam, said in a letter to Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres that the joint military exercises with South Korea are creating "the worst ever situation prevailing in and around the Korean peninsula".

During his trip, Trump struck a tough tone on North Korea, calling for an end to its nuclear program and saying "we hope to God we never have to use" the military strength the United States has on the Korean Peninsula. "Multiple aircraft carrier strike force operations are extremely complex, and this training is a solid demonstration of the US Pacific Fleet's remarkable capacity and strong sense of duty regarding the security and stability of the country".

South Korean military sources said they are monitoring activity in the North as troops prepare for winter drills.

The four-day drill began Sunday, and it gives the three carrier strike groups an unusual opportunity to train together as an integrated unit alongside allied South Korean and Japanese forces.

"Nobody knows when and how the "war maniac" Trump will ignite the 'wick of war, '" the officials said, referring to the presence of the carriers near the peninsula.

The U.S.S. Nimitz, the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan all took part in the exercise, along with their accompanying vessels.
