HTC shows its standalone Vive Focus VR headset

According to device's website the headset supports something called World Sense which support six degrees of freedom which allows natural movements like ducking, leaning, and peeking. HTC is planning a launch only in China as of now with no official release date available yet. This standalone headset has no wires and doesn't require an external device to work.

HTC has also announced that is abandoning the development of Daydream VR headset and it appears it is putting all of its eggs into China market as, according to HTC's Vice President Raymond Pao statement for Engadget.com, it appears that the company now have no plans to take the Vive Wave platform outside of China. In addition, the company cancelled plans to bring the Google Daydream-compatible headset to European and North American markets.

The platform will make it very easy for developers to port content made for the Vive to the Vive Focus, with VR game Spark of Light for example only taking three hours. In other words, the Vive Focus can be used everywhere without any PC or base stations.

The appeal of the Vive Focus goes beyond its standalone capabilities though. The new headset will come equipped with a relatively simplistic Bluetooth 3DoF controller akin to those supplied with the Samsung Gear VR headset. Despite this, HTC says it'll still offer similar features to the higher-end Vive. As a software framework comes a new open-source operating system Vive Wave Open Platform. "Besides the introduction of the Vive Focus, also Vive Wave was introduced". It is basically Google's Daydream platform, but for the Chinese market.

Google collaborating with Lenovo is also confirmed that they will release the product with same features as mentioned.

"As the VR industry leader in China, it is our duty to help reduce market fragmentation and provide content developers with more ways to make money", HTC Vive head Alvin Wang Graylin said in a statement regarding the news.
