No reason for the leak has been given by the company. There have been no reports of the oil entering any waterways or water systems at this time.

TransCanada estimates the pipeline leaked 5,000 barrels of oil, or about 210,000 gallons, before going offline.

The pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, to Cushing, Oklahoma and Patoka, Illinois is expected to remain shut down as crew investigate, according to the company.

Brian Walsh with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources tells KSFY News they were alerted to the leak at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning by TransCanada.

"The safety of the public and environment are out top priorities and we will continue to provide updates as they become available", TransCanada added.

It appears the oil leaked from a section of the underground pipeline and not at an above-ground pumping station, Walsh said. The Keystone XL pipeline has been opposed by environmental and Native American groups since it was proposed a year ago.

After Tokyo commuter train leaves 20 seconds early, company apologizes

What is sometimes called the Keystone 1 pipeline went into operation in 2010 and has a daily capacity of about 590,000 barrels of tar sands crude oil from western Canada.

The same pipeline leaked about 17,000 gallons a year ago near Freeman, South Dakota.

The Keystone XL pipeline got federal USA approval in March when President Donald Trump overturned former President Barack Obama's rejection of the project in 2015.

The pipeline is a segment of the 2,687-mile TransCanada system that is set to also include the controversial proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which is promised to be the safest pipeline ever built in North America by the company.

Native American groups have argued the pipeline would cut across their sovereign lands.
