Feud grows between NFL, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over Goodell

The NFL is accusing Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of engaging in conduct detrimental to the league in persisting in his efforts to obstruct the pending contract extension being negotiated between the owners' compensation committee and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The letter was sent to Jones' attorney, David Boies, who Jones hired recently to try and ratchet up the tension on the NFL. While all 32 owners voted for an extension, it's now up to the competition committee to decide the compensation for Goodell.

The Wall Street Journal corroborated the report on Thursday.

Elliott abandoned his legal fight over the suspension on Wednesday. He's eligible to return December 24.

"Your client's antics, whatever their motivation, are damaging the league and reflect conduct detrimental to the league's best interests", the letter said.

This doesn't mean that they don't want to execute a new contract with Goodell. He also has suggested that owners should revisit the power that the position wields.

Jones, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, was accused of sharing with all the owners an outdated document related to the negotiations with Goodell. He has said that "well over half" of owners agree with him.

Jones is taking shots and now some other football barons are lobbing salvos of their own. They didn't speak on the field before the Falcons' 27-7 victory over the Cowboys in Atlanta on Sunday.

The compensation committee is composed of six owners.

A spokesman for Jones didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I don't know where this is coming from about stripping him of his franchise", the owner said, on the condition of anonymity because of the threat of litigation by Jones.

The letter sent on Wednesday said Jones is trying to "deliberately interfere" with the committee's work.

Goodell has the authority to administer those penalties under the league constitution in Article VIII, Section 8.13. Potential disciplinary actions could include a fine, suspension or the loss of a draft pick or picks by the Cowboys.

Jones can back off now, grumbling about Goodell and Ezekiel Elliott and Papa John's stock price and ungrateful players daring to shine a public light on racial injustice and inequality, or he can go full Al Davis and start battling in court on multiple fronts, if need be.

The committee said in the letter that it has continued to keep owners informed.
