Police officer, militant of Zakir Musa group killed in Srinagar encounter

A sub-inspector of police's counter-insurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) was killed and a special police officer injured during a shootout with militants on Srinagar's outskirts on Friday.

Claiming the responsibility of the Zakura attack, militant outfit Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TeM), in a press statement, said that Mugees aka Umar bin Khattab, the outfit's "district commander" Pulwama, was also "martyred" during the shootout.

Later, police came to know that Mugees Ahmad Mir, one of the two militants who had managed to escape, was brought home dead. "His body has reached his home and we have started further investigation", he said.

Sources said Mugees belonged to Ansar Ghazwat ul Hind, an Al-Qaeda Kashmir cell headed by Zakir Moosa.

The slain militant belonged to Parimpora area of Srinagar. "A militant was also captured during the operation", the police official said.

Another militant was arrested, police said.

The injured were rushed to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where SI Imran Ahmad succumbed.

The official said the police team managed to intercept the vehicle and apprehended one militant, but two others fled from the scene.

A massive hunt has been launched by security forces in the area to nab the militants; they said adding additional security forces have been rushed there.

"Both the militants were together at the time of the shootout. The combing operation was going on", the police officer said. As the searches were on near suspected spot, hiding militants opened fire, resulting in injuries to two cops including one sub-inspector, who is stated to be in critical condition.
