Families changed for the better, forever on National Adoption Day

Michigan's 15th annual Adoption Day is set for next Tuesday, November 21st with events across the state. "I lost all of it, and now that I'm adopted, I have so much success in my sports and with my family", Jerika said.

For families like the Quinns, the road to adoption has been long.

Searching for families to foster is critical to the process, she said. Unsurprisingly, aging out of the foster care system without a family to fall back on comes with a heightened risk of a number of negative outcomes for youth in care, including failing to complete high school, increased involvement with the criminal justice system, unemployment, homelessness, and being trafficked.

Jared Wade said 2-year-old Bellajoan has lived with him and his wife, Amy, since she was 3 weeks old and he seemed relieved to finalize her adoption. In a nearby courtroom, Nong and Moua Vang, of Fresno, were asking the court to allow them to become the parents of 5-year-old Emma, a medically fragile foster child born with a condition that requires lifelong 24-hour care, with a trach and a feeding tube. Hart asked if they promised to adopt the bear just as their parents have adopted them.

Melanie Lee Siebert, who adopted two of her sons as part of Adoption Day six years ago, said she returned this year to support the Wades, who are her friends. "I think it was a very easy decision at the end of the day especially because they were truly a joy", said Anthony Anderson, the adoptive father.

Amy Smith, Cullman County DHR director, said, "It is our position at Cullman County DHR that NO child should be deemed unadoptable, and that there is a forever family made for every single child in foster care with a plan of adoption".

"Lucy came to us as foster parents, and ... she was my daughter instantly", Russ Eyer said.

"It's more of a objective in life", Archibald said of adopting.
