Pak troops open fire in Poonch along LoC, India retaliates

Firing across the LoC has become a regular practice by Indian troops and has inflicted material and human losses on the Pakistani side of the border.

"The schools along the LoC in Degwar, Malti, Ajot, Begayaldara, Jhulas and other adjoining areas were closed in view of the firing and shelling by Pakistan on Friday morning", Deputy Commissioner, Poonch, Tariq Ahmed Zargar said.

"The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and global human rights and humanitarian laws", said Faisal.

Lt Gen Bhatt told him that Indian soldiers had only retaliated to unprovoked and repeated ceasefire violation initiated by the troops of Pakistan along the LoC. The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation. The request for the unscheduled Hot Line interaction between the DGMOs of the two armies came from the Pakistan side.

India maintains that UNMOGIP has outlived its utility and is irrelevant after the Simla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the LoC.

Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations.

There were almost 450 ceasefire violations in 2016 in which 13 civilians and as many security personnel were killed.India shares a 3,323-km-long border with Pakistan of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu andKashmir.
