The senator's comments received a strong response from Hillary Clinton's former spokesman, criticizing her for accepting support from the Clinton's for over 20 years.

Bill Clinton engaged in a sexual relationship with Lewinsky, who was 22 at the time, between 1995 and 1996.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (2nd R) (D-NY), Rep. Jackie Speier (2nd L) (D-CA), Rep. Bruce Poliquin (L) (D-ME), and Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (R) (D-NH) speak at a press conference on sexual harassment in Congress on November 15, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Gillibrand's disavowal of the Clintons follows other former allies such as Donna Brazile and left-wing Vox columnist Matthew Yglesias. Kirsten Gillibrand said former President Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, then a White House intern, should have forced him to resign at the time.

A New York Times podcast host asked her if she believed the former president should have stepped down after the Lewinsky affair was outed.

"In my adult life, politically, no one has inspired me to get off the sidelines and truly make a difference more than Hillary Clinton has", Ms. Gillibrand said previous year in an essay on why she was supporting Mrs. Clinton.

Gillibrand's remarks are particularly noteworthy considering she was a big supporter of Hillary Clinton's recent presidential campaign. He was later acquitted of the charges in the Senate and remained in office.
