Jose Mourinho has slammed England's treatment of defender Phil Jones after the Manchester United defender was forced to take anaesthetic injections to play the Three Lions' friendly against Germany during the recent global break.

Speaking to reporters Mourinho expressed his shock at the unprecedented events that led to Jones' injury: "As a manager, since 2000, in 17 years I don't have one single player that has injections of anaesthetic to play a friendly".

The 25-year-old Manchester United defender suffered an injury in Friday's worldwide friendly that Mourinho says will sideline him for the Premier League game against Newcastle. "Drinkwater? Delph? The only one that is not playing is Phil Jones".

"I'm just telling a fact. Between the warm-up and the start of the match he had five more local anaesthetic injections".

And Mourinho says he expects the players who were not fit enough for worldwide duty to miss this weekend's Premier League fixtures.

It is Mourinho's criticism, however, that is the most damaging and inflammatory and after he said he expected all the England players who were unavailable through injury for the last get-together to not play for their clubs this weekend - a clear dig at the spate of withdrawals from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City - he levelled a powerful accusation at Southgate.

"If any player is ready for Saturday there is something odd".

At least Mourinho has some good injury news - both Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are available for this evening's game.Hopefully they will make up for the loss of Phil Jones.

It is flawless timing for United as they look to eat into Manchester City's eight-point lead at the top of the table before the first derby on the season on December 10.

"I am not an angel and I had players injected to play official matches, crucial matches", he said.

"All the other matches Manchester City plays, we can not interfere".
