Massive gas line fire burning in Orion Township

The cause is unknown at this time but a 22-inch diameter steel gas transmission line ruptured, causing the fire.

Firefighters on Monday night, November 20th were called out to the scene of a massive fire in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

A spokesperson says what happened was very rare and the cause of the rupture is under investigation.

Consumers Energy spokesman Roger Morgenstern said the fire eventually burned itself out.

The fire broke out on vacant land.

Phone lines, including 9-1-1 lines are down because of the fire.

Auburn Hills police tweeted that areas in Orion Township were being evacuated as a precaution.

Callers are saying it is a gas line explosion.

Flames shot hundreds of feet in the air and could be seen from as far as 25 miles away.
