Robert Mugabe: Zimbabwe's war hero turned brutal autocrat

"If they get him on that, then they are exposing him to that whole issue about, you know, crimes against humanity and so forth", he said.

ZANU-PF plans to bring the motion in parliament after a Monday noon deadline expired for the 93-year-old leader to step down to end almost four decades in power.

"I told the President I would not return home now until I am satisfied of my personal security, because of the manner and treatment given to me upon being fired", he said in the statement.

Mugabe's resignation was announced by the speaker of the country's parliament, Jacob Mudenda.

His grip on power was shattered last week when armoured military vehicles took to the streets, blockaded parliament and placed the president under house arrest in an operation that had all the hallmarks of a coup.

The marchers' joy quickly turned to despair as Mugabe brushed aside the turmoil, blithely declaring on Sunday that he would chair a top-level meeting of the party that had just disavowed him. In that new Zimbabwe it is important for everyone to join hands so that we rebuild this nation to its full glory‚ this is not a job for Zanu PF alone but for all people of Zimbabwe. This was contrary to all the protocols that have exited in Zimbabwe to former State Vice Presidents of the Republic of Zimbabwe. Although the army was now in an invidious position - having to choose between "protecting him from the crowd" and responding to the people's will - he said he believed Zimbabwe's soldiers would not shoot their own people.

Mugabe's resignation marks a major turning point in Zimbabwe's history.

"Rename Robert Mugabe Road" said one, "free elections, no to police brutality" said another.

"Nor was it a challenge to my authority as head of state and government".

In my conversation with the president I told him that there are two options‚ that is (a) to cooperate in the current negotiations with comrades from the defence forces for a peaceful resolution of this crisis‚ which would result in the preservation of his legacy.

"To the man, the command element remained respectful, and comported with the dictates and mores of constitutionalism", he said.

Also, in December 2015, Mugabe read another wrong speech at Victoria Falls at the Zanu-PF party's annual conference.

With the army cleared by Mugabe, Zanu-PF yesterday said it would initiate impeachment processes today.

The statement said none of Mugabe's allegations was ever tested in a court of law, and that he had abrogated his constitutional mandate to his wife, Grace.

The announcement that the two presidents would take direct control of efforts to negotiate a settlement came after Zimbabwe's parliament began debating a motion that could eventually lead to Mugabe's impeachment.

Zimbabwe's constitution provides four grounds for impeaching a president or vice president: serious misconduct; failure to obey, uphold or defend the constitution; willful violation of the constitution; or inability to perform the functions of the office because of physical or mental incapacity.

His comments could be interpreted as referring to Mugabe's wife, Grace, whose lavish lifestyle and political ambitions alarmed sections of the ruling party's elite.

Such protests are rare in Zimbabwe, where people had for decades been too afraid to protest under the country's oppressive rule.
