The statistic, released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, reflects consumer insight regarding shopping on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Sunday and Cyber Monday, according to a press release.

By shopping or dining at your favorite local places in the city throughout the year, you're showing your support for small businesses and making a positive impact here. Spending at independent retailers and restaurants throughout the USA on Small Business Saturday has grown from $5 billion in 2012 to $15.4 billion in 2016, according to the National Federation of Independent Business. For example, the nation's largest retailer, Walmart, will begin its shopping deals at midnight Thursday on walmart.com for people who don't want to wait in line for in-store sales, which begin at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Before taking office in 2013, O'Brien was the founder and owner of GoldWorks at 499 Campbell Ave., a jewelry fix and retail shop that has operated in the heart of the downtown business district since 1988.
