Before Brisbane, Vince averaged 19 and hadn't scored a half-century in his seven tests.

Vince then joined Mark Stoneman and the duo bailed their side out of the initial slump. Following the dismissal of Alastair Cook early in the innings, Vince put on a 125-run stand with Marcus Stoneman to steady the ship for the visitors.Pat Cummins then got rid of Stoneman after he completed his fifty but Vince held his own on the other end and kept moving steadily towards his maiden century.

Vince, Stoneman and Malan will be wary having seen up close the Aussie pair reach shoulder height with bouncers on Thursday, but will be filled with confidence that whenever the pitch speeds up from now until Perth they have the tools to cope.

Lyon will have a big role to play on day two, but already has produced the highlight of the Test so far with his spectacular run out of Vince - though the man they call "Garry" was happy to play his feat down.

Eighteen runs later, Root fell leg before wicket to Cummins after a review, in another huge scalp for the toiling Australians. It's not the sort of rhetorical question that had been predicted when he was recalled - amid scenes of barely surpressed mockery - to be England's nailed-on Ashes No. 3.

But the selectors evidently saw something in the quality of his shot-making that deserved a second chance, and in powering past his previous Test best of 42, he returned that faith in spades.

LaVar Ball: Lakers Coaches 'Soft' on Lonzo Ball
The Lakers have started the season 7-10, and although Ball has a pair of triple-doubles in that span, his shooting has been poor. Long story short, Byron says guys like LaVar need to shut their traps and let the coaches coach.

"I'm very confident with where my bowling is at, at the moment".

But right from the outset, Vince had his game brain in full working order.

Vince top-scored as the tourists scored slowly, but when he scampered for a quick single off Josh Hazlewood. The spinner bowled beautifully throughout his spells, though he was unlucky not to pick Vince's wicket as wicketkeeper Tim Paine dropped him on 68. Fortunately, Lyon himself made sure that the damage wasn't irreparable. Afterwards, almost an hour and 15 minutes of play was wasted due to rain before sunshine returned.

If the surface does harden up over the next few days, Australia - unbeaten in Brisbane since 1988 - could get the best of the batting conditions and more pace for their bowlers in England's second innings.

Smith and Tim Paine got through the next 13 overs until the new ball but Anderson (2-50) needed just four balls with it to remove the latter, Jonny Bairstow taking a fine one-handed catch behind the stumps.
