As the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season closes, we look back on what was quite an indelible season.

It was a nightmare of a season that brought 17 named storms, 10 of them hurricanes.

Initial predictions for our hurricane season had begun in an El Niño phase, which usually means a less active hurricane season. Also outside of the continental US, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico as a Category 5 storm.

Hurricane Nate also made USA landfall, but never reached major hurricane level.

This year we saw an unusually active hurricane season, but not the most active. - First Category 4 hurricane to hit Texas since 1961.

Mr Dodgson said that tropical cyclones can form outside of the official season but that colder seas and a more active jet stream mean they usually remain “more subtropical in nature”.

The three disastrous storms we faced this year, Harvey, Irma, and Maria, are estimated to cost more than $206 billion in economic impact. The official totals will not come out for a few weeks, but that record is now held by the 2005 Hurricane Season (Charley, Francis, Ivan, Jeanne, Katrina) caused an estimated $143.5 billion of damage to this country.

Several of the storms were extremely powerful, and left $368.6 billion worth of damage in the United States and Caribbean. Puerto Rico lost its entire power grid and new data released on November 29 suggest the death toll in that USA territory will likely surpass 1,000.

But while 2017 was a busy Atlantic hurricane season, it was not a record year.

(5) In October, the freaky and unpredictable storm, Ophelia, nearly made it across the entire northern Atlantic Ocean at hurricane strength.

Then, as if the earlier battering of the Caribbean was not enough, Hurricane Maria formed, ruining the island of Dominica, ravaging St. Croix, and pummeling Puerto Rico before moving to U.S.'s east coast as a tropical storm. After losing its tropical characteristics, Ophelia's winds caused massive wildfires in Portugal and Spain. The previous record: Hurricane Frances in 1980.
