The Falcon Heavy is a powerful rocket, which is the follow-up to the Falcon 9.

In a separate tweet, the tech billionaire also said that the destination of the Tesla Roadster is the Mars orbit.

Musk say the rockets payload will include his personal Midnight Cherry Tesla Roadster, and while it is being blasted into space the car's stereo will be playing David Bowie's "Space Oddity". Musk himself has said that the first Falcon Heavy launch may end in disaster or fail to achieve Earth orbit, much less complete a Hohmann transfer and head for Mars.

It will, Musk predicted, "be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent".

To put that figure in perspective, Spaceflight Now notes that the Falcon Heavy-at more than 229 feet tall and 3.1 million pounds-will have more thrust than any conventional rocket currently in use.

Falcon Heavy is the followup to SpaceX's Falcon 9.

It's an impressive piece of engineering, able to lift into orbit three times more than the current successful Falcon 9 can (63.8 metric tonnes, compared with 22.8 metric tonnes). Musk's tweets seem to negate reports from prior this week that the Falcon Heavy dispatch wouldn't happen until mid-2018. As if bringing humans to the Red Planet were not hard enough, he has now announced he wants to send his Tesla sports vehicle too. The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk has claimed that the Falcon Heavy rocket's first trip to space will accompany a Tesla Roadster into space.

The company also aims to launch a second mission in 2024, which will transport both cargo and crew to Mars with the main objective of constructing a propellant depot and getting ready for future manned flights. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.
