Sources in Mr Saleh's party confirmed he died in an attack on his convoy.

Saleh was killed by Houthis in a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and shooting attack on his auto at a checkpoint outside Sana'a, according to Al Jazeera.

Yasser al-Awadi, the GPC's assistant secretary-general, was also killed.

"Its forces had taken over all the positions and strongholds of the treacherous militia in the capital, Sanna, and the surrounding areas, as well as other provinces in order to impose security". Most people were indoors, and streets were deserted amid a state of fear as the Houthis asserted full control.

Any hope of the coalition that Mr Saleh could have been bought off to help turn the tables against the Houthis after a protracted stalemate, in which a Saudi-led blockade and internal fighting has exposed millions to hunger and epidemic, has been dashed.

Houthi also said he had sent several warnings to Saleh.

A dominant figure in Yemen, Saleh, 75, ruled the country for more than three decades before being deposed in 2012. He remained in the country, however, and continued to wield power from behind the scenes.

The Houthis, who are believed to be backed by Iran, stormed Sanaa in September 2014. In recent weeks, Houthis have claimed responsibility for rocket attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which Gulf leaders have publicly accused Iran of helping facilitate.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened to reinstate Hadi's government.

Unverified footage circulated showing his bloodied body, just days after he tore up his alliance with the Houthis following almost three years in which they had jointly battled the Saudi-led coalition.

In a lengthy televised speech aired on the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV network, Abdul Malek al-Houthi said his fighters killed Saleh for his "treason" and congratulated Yemenis "on this historic, exceptional and great day in which the conspiracy of betrayal and treason failed, this black day for the forces of the aggression".

"You can not say this is the end of his political movement, but it's a very big blow", he said.

The Yemeni war has already become one of the largest humanitarian catastrophes in the world, and the death of Saleh has the potential to make the conflict even worse.

On Saturday, Saleh appeared to change sides once more. His death puts the exclamation point on the end of an era in Yemen that had, for all intents and purposes, already come to a close.

"We have notified the leader of the traitor and criminal militias to retract, be wise, to stop his militias from continuing committing crimes", he said.
